Adhering To Christian Values

As a Christian, it is important to you that your money is handled in a manner that is consistent with your faith. That is precisely the goal of Biblically Responsible Investing (BRI).

There are a variety of issues that shareholders and stockholders face regarding how companies manage their business. Among those issues are:

  • Alcohol
  • Abortion
  • Anti-family issues
  • Bioethics
  • Gambling
  • Homosexuality
  • Human rights
  • Tobacco
  • Pornography

What Is Biblically Responsible Investing (BRI)?

BRI applies Christian values to the investment decision making process.

If you are familiar with this concept, you may have heard it referred to by other names; such as Faith Based Investing, Values Investing, Christian Values Investing, Morally Responsible Investing, and others like these.

How Do BRI Investments Perform?

At Shepherd, we’re convinced that you don’t have to sacrifice performance for your principles. As Christian investors, we should make it our aim to do well for ourselves while we do good to others.

In a White Paper from Christian Investment Forum (CIF), they conclude:

“For investors and their advisors, considering funds that can align with their Christian faith need not be a choice between values and performance. “

In fact, a report from Wharton finds,

“Impact funds in the sample that reported seeking market-rate return—which is only one segment of the broad spectrum of impact funds—demonstrated that they can achieve results comparable to market indices”

And if the returns are relatively equivalent, Christian investors shouldn’t have much reason to invest any other way. The sources of our returns should be just as important as the amount of our returns.

A Rise In SRI

In the recent past, there has been a rise in interest for socially responsible investing (SRI); BRI is a subcategory of SRI. According to Lipper data, over 6 billion dollars flowed into SRI funds. There are now a large variety of mutual funds that rival non-BRI driven mutual funds and investing options.
