Investment Management

As fee-only fiduciaries, we put your interests first. We do not receive commissions from selling investment products. Our focus is managing your investments to support your goals through disciplined, diversified, tax-aware decisions.

Shepherd designs and manages portfolios around your goals, time horizon, cash-flow needs, risk, tax considerations, and broader financial plan.

Our approach is disciplined, diversified, cost-conscious, and tax-aware. Rather than trying to predict what markets will do next, we focus on the investment decisions that can be thoughtfully managed over time.

What the relationship includes

Ongoing management—not a one-time allocation.

Your portfolio is monitored and adjusted as markets, tax considerations, cash needs, goals, and your financial life evolve.

Portfolio design

A diversified investment strategy built around your goals, time horizon, cash-flow needs, risk, taxes, and broader financial plan.

Ongoing oversight

Continuous monitoring, disciplined rebalancing, and thoughtful adjustments as markets and your circumstances change.

Income coordination

Investment decisions coordinated with near-term spending, retirement income, liquidity needs, and planned withdrawals.

Tax-aware management

Attention to asset location, realized gains and losses, turnover, and other investment decisions that can affect after-tax outcomes.

Risk management

A portfolio structured around the risks that matter to your plan, including market declines, inflation, longevity, liquidity, and concentration.

Values-aligned considerations

When desired, thoughtful discussion of how investment choices may reflect your convictions without losing sight of diversification and prudent portfolio management.

How fees fit together

When Planning and Investment Management Work Together

Financial planning and investment management often work best together. The financial plan helps define what your resources need to accomplish, while the investment strategy helps put those resources to work toward those goals.

For some clients who engage Shepherd for investment management, ongoing financial planning is included as part of the overall relationship rather than billed separately.

In other relationships, a separate planning fee may apply based on the complexity and scope of the planning involved. We consider the overall relationship, including the assets we manage and the level of ongoing planning and coordination required, when determining the appropriate fee.

In every case, we explain what services are included and what you will pay before you decide whether to become a client.

Common questions

What to know before the first conversation.

What does 'starting at' mean?+

The starting fee reflects the least complex engagement within that relationship. Your written scope and exact fee are provided before you decide whether to begin.

How are investment-management fees calculated?+

Investment-management fees use a graduated schedule: 1.00% on the first $1 million Shepherd manages, 0.75% on the next $2 million, and 0.50% on assets above $3 million. Each rate applies only to the assets within that tier.

Are planning and investment-management fees the same?+

Financial planning may be included in an investment-management relationship rather than billed separately. A separate planning fee may apply depending on the scope and complexity of the work and the overall relationship. We explain the services included and any applicable fees before you decide whether to become a client.

How are ongoing fees billed?+

Ongoing planning is an annual commitment billed in quarterly installments. Investment-management fees are also billed quarterly based on the assets Shepherd manages. The exact terms are documented before the relationship begins.

Can I begin with Focused Financial Planning and move into an ongoing relationship?+

Yes, when an ongoing relationship is appropriate and mutually agreed upon. Focused Financial Planning is also available as a stand-alone, limited-scope engagement.

Can I engage Shepherd for only one service?+

Yes. Financial planning and investment management are available as distinct services. Many clients choose both so portfolio decisions stay connected to the rest of their financial lives, but the relationship is defined around the services you engage Shepherd to provide.

Do these fees apply to current clients?+

This page describes the fee structure for new relationships. Existing relationships remain governed by their current agreements unless amended in writing.
